Ordnance Survey
Ordnance Survey is the national mapping agency for Great Britain. It's our job to define exactly where every important 'thing' is in England, Scotland and Wales. We keep it all up to date, from new roads and buildings to shifting coasts and rural change, so that our map data can be relied on by everyone from supermarkets and sat nav providers to local councils and the emergency services. It's all a long way from 200 years ago, when we started mapping the coast ready to repel an expected French invasion; which is where the military tag 'Ordnance' comes from.
We also make maps for walkers and you will have met those Landranger and Explorer maps in your geography lessons, or maybe at Scouts, or as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Completing our missions will help you to become more observant and adept at putting together visual clues from the landscape to solve problems. The missions will improve your sense of direction and help you to develop a new awareness of the spatial dimension, remember both to raise your eyes to the horizon and to look nearby. You will begin to notice new patterns that will give you more confidence to navigate your way around the your local area and country .
We have chosen the Ordnance Survey Viewpoint symbol as inspiration for our first badge. On a map these 750+ symbols are all identical, but in real life each is a unique experience.
