The bridge you are on crosses over the Grand Union Canal, the longest canal in the UK. Canals like this were used for transporting things quickly and cheaply before trains (and, later, motor vehicles) became popular. Canals an the towpaths alongside them are now mostly used for recreation - they're a great way to enjoy the countryside!
